Melaka Travelogue (Part 2, Day 2)

Part 2: St. Paul's Church, A'Famosa, Dataran Pahlawan, Portuguese Settlement
Day 2: Tuesday, 21st May 2013

St. Paul's church is a ruin which is located beside the Muzium Yang di-Pertua Negeri on St. Paul's hill. It is a historic church in Malacca that was built in the year 1521 by the Portuguese.

The green coloured on your right represents St. Paul's hill.

In the church, there are many old Portuguese tombstones. Might be one of my ancestors tombstones too i guess.

The inside of the old church. There weren't many people around in the afternoon.

My shadow! =)

The view outside of the church.

Look! That's me! Being a tourist in my own hometown. =)

This is Max. He's a Eurasian just like me. He sits there every single day with his guitar, singing songs. He may be old but he does have a good voice and he plays music without any music sheets. He is a really good and cheerful entertainer! Any song you request, he can play and sing it so well! One of my classmate from China requested a Chinese song and to my surprise, he did a very good job! Eurasians are always good in music and dancing. It is a part of our culture.

A video of Uncle Max singing the chinese song. =)

Another video of Uncle Max singing "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You'.

The view as I was going downhill. There were also a few small souvenir stalls that I saw along the way down. Becareful when you're on your way down!

On the way down, we came across this Eurasian man who plays the harmonica very well. He played some of the old Portuguese songs for Portuguese cultural dances and it was amazing!

The back view of A'Famosa (Porta de Santiago).

This is a real cannon. And it is as old as the A'Famosa fort. Trust me. =)

A'Famosa (Porta de Santiago)
In the year 1511, the Portuguese attacked and defeated the Malacca Sultanate which forced the last Sultan of Malacca to flee away from the city The. A'Famosa (Porta de Santiago) fortress was build after the Portuguese colonized Malacca under the command of Alfonso de Albuquerque. The Portuguese ruled over more than a century. In the year 1641, the Dutch successfully colonized Malacca and drove the Portuguese out. The Dutch emblem their company logo, VOC (the abbreviation of Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie), on the gates of Porta de Santiago (A'Famosa) and reconstructed the fort. In the early 19th century, the fort was handed over to the British after the Dutch which ruled for more than 300years. The British could not maintain the fort, therefore, ordered the fort to be demolished. Most of the fort had been desroyed. However, Sir Stamford Raffles who happened to visit Malacca saved the remaining fort from being demolished.

The A'Famosa (Porta de Santiago) we see today, was the only remaining fort still standing which is actually a small gate. It is one of the oldest surviving historical remains of European architecture in the whole of Asia. The A'Famosa (Porta de Santiago) is also one of the major historal landmarks and popular sites in the city of Malacca.

If you're nearby Stadhuys, it is a short walking distance to the A'Famosa. You can drive to Jalan Parameswara, park your vehicle at the parking space opposite three schools which are SK Sacred Heart, SK Bandar Hilir and SMK St. Francis Institution and then walk to A'Famosa which can be seen from the parking space. A' Famosa is located at Jalan Kota which is very near to Jalan Parameswara and Jalan Gereja.

We walked to Dataran Pahlawan Megamall from the A'Famosa fort since it was just on the opposite. Dataran Pahlawan Megamall is also located beside of Mahkota Parade, the mall that i mentioned in my Day 1 blog. You can find many types of entertainment here. For example, Coral Wonderland, 6D theater, archery, arcade, Dreambox karaoke, and GSC cinema. There are also lots of small shops that sells really nice clothes at a very reasonable price. There are also lots of food choices such as A&W, McDonald's, Papa John's Pizza, Chatime, Tong Pak Fu, Starbucks and many more. If you're planning to spend your day for some entertainment and shopping here, I'm sure you're gonna have a good time! No doubt! =)

We went to the arcade since we were tired.

It wasn't so crowded because it was a weekday.

A map to get you to Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall.

There is a parking lot available below the shopping mall. The parking fee is RM3 for two hours and additional RM1 for every hour. You can also take the town bus here which the ticket will cost you RM1. The taxi fare will cost you RM15.

When we got back, it was already in the evening. I recommended my friends to try Derrick's Burger at D'Aranjo Road in the Portuguese Settlement for dinner. Many customers finds Derrick's Burger filling, juicy and delicious. The burger patty is made by Uncle Derrick and his wife. The stall is open from 5.30pm until 11pm.

There's beef burger, chicken burger, fish burger, hot dog and egg banjo and they're all sold at a very reasonable price.
Make sure to try it!

While waiting for the burger, I recommended my friends to another stall. Joes Only One Mango Juice in Coconut Island, Portuguese Settlement sells the best, unique and rich mango juice in the whole of Malacca. It was even out in the newspapers too! Many people queue up to buy the drinks here. A cup with ice is RM2.50, less ice is RM3 and without ice is RM3.50. The stall also sells Coconute Shake together with vanilla ice-cream for RM2.50. I've tried both and they taste real good!

The jetty is on the opposite of Joes Only One Mango Juice stall.
We went for a walk there.
Beautiful view.

Tadaaaa.... I had my Chicken Special burger after that!

There is a big parking space available beside the Coconut Island and it is only RM1. A taxi from any parts of Malacca Town to Portuguese Settlement can cost you RM10 or RM15. The Panorama Bus to Portuguese Settlement cost only RM1.

We had a good and simple dinner that night! Drop by Portuguese Settlement for the famous tasty mango juice, burger and coconut shake! It is A MUST TRY! That's all for Day 2. More Malacca adventures to come so be prepared for Melaka Travelogue (Part 1, Day 3).
